SESSIONS ON BIOBANKING 2019

Session On: Vision on Biobanking

Biobanking is a sophisticated system that consists of the programme storage of biological material and their corresponding data. Biobanks are developed to use in clinical and translational medicine, healthcare and medical research. In the past decades, a large number of biobanks have been set up around the world, to support modern research and lead to the direction of personalized medicine. More recently, embryonic and adult stem cell banks have been developed for their use in clinical transplant applications. The quality and standardization of the samples stored in a biobank are very important. The biological material stored in a biobank must be processed with compatibility so that it can be used to preserve samples in the same field.

Session On: Tissue culture and Preservation

The preserved cells and tissues are used in the field of regenerative medicine for treating congenital disorders, heart defects and neurological disorders etc. Cryopreservation of ovarian tissue has been used for the treatment of infertility. A direct application of such a technique would be in cancer patients by using chemotherapy and radiotherapy which indiscriminately destroy diseased as well as healthy cells. The cryopreserve pre-implantation embryos from both animal and human sources helped to overcome some of the practical concerns. For some tissues, the preservation process might be crucial and for others, it might be not. These considerations are considered for the design of preservation methods for specific tissues like bone tendon and skin which can provide useful grafts in the absence of living cells and this is also used for cardiac valves.

Session On: Tissue Repair and Lifecare

As living beings, every individual might encounter traumatic event from small injury to myocardial infarction. We must find ways to heal damaged tissues and organs. Some animals can regrow their body parts completely following each injury such as earthworm while humans are sadly incapable of such feats. Our means of recovering these tissue damage largely consists of repair rather than pure regeneration. Lifecare has meticulously scripted the unseen wound healing drama which serves as an actor cell in extracellular matrix and growth factors as the means of communication. This briefly reviews the cells involved in tissue repair, their signalling and proliferation mechanisms and the function of the extracellular matrix then presents the actors and script for the three acts of the tissue repair drama.

Session On: Tissue Engineering & Bioengineering

Tissue engineering is developed from the biomaterial field and it also refers to the practice of combining cells, biologically active molecules and scaffolds into functional tissues. The goal of tissue engineering is to develop, restore and maintain or improve damaged tissues or whole organs. Artificial skin, bones and cartilage are examples of engineered tissues that have been approved by the FDA. But recently they are used less in human patients. Bioengineering uses nature as an inspiration source for the generation of extracellular matrix analogues (scaffolds), either from the natural or synthetic origin as well as bioreactors and bio-devices to mimic natural physiological conditions for specific tissues. These scaffolds embedded cells are viewed in a three-dimensional milieu that display signals critical for the determination of cell fate, in terms of proliferation, differentiation and migration, among others.

Session On: Tissue Repair and Regeneration

Owing to the differences in genetics, development, immune systems and tissue complexity vertebrates, mammals and humans have limited innate capacity for the self-regeneration of tissues and organs. Endogenous stem cells have the capacity to self-renew and differentiate into specific cell types and these are tissue-specific adult stem cells. Endogenous stem cells are explored for the regeneration of tissues in situ and in vivo. Stem cells reside in specific niches in the body and their activation can be recreated using biomaterial-based scaffolds. These scaffolds can be fabricated into a variety of shapes and formulations which are functionalized to guide biochemical and biophysical in stem cell fate and migration. The self-regeneration abilities of adult stem cell populations and their niches involved in tissue repair and regeneration. The natural and synthetic biomaterials and their potential for improving applications of endogenous stem cells play an important role to examine interspecies in regenerative medicine.

Session On: Application of Stem Cells in Tissue Preservation

Adult human stem cells have demonstrated tremendous human therapeutic potential. Currently, human embryonic stem cells are also used principally for understanding development and disease progression and it holds tremendous therapeutic potential. Clinical and research applications provide the ability to preserve stem cells for their critical use. Thus, preserving the cells permits the transportation of cells between sites, as well as completion of safety and quality control testing. These preservations also permit the development of a manufacturing paradigm for cell therapies and thereby it maximises the number of products to be produced. These provide the fact of preservation and the current status of preservation of hematopoietic, mesenchymal and human embryonic stem cells.

Session On: Tissue Preservation and Cancer Therapy

Ovarian tissues may be cryopreserved for adult women and prepubertal girls facing cancer treatment. If they have successful therapies for their disease, the tissue can be auto transplanted back into the woman's body or follicles and harvested as matured in vitro. These procedures should be done under approval from an Institutional Review Board with a proper assurance of informed consent. In a recent review shows that frozen-thawed ovarian transplantation has led about 90 live births and their conception rate was about 30%. Endocrine function recovery was observed between 3.5 and 6.5 months after transplantation and resulted in 92.9%. Based on this review, ovarian tissue cryopreservation and transplantation should be carefully considered for cancer treatment to preserve fertility and endocrine function in young cancer survivors.

Session On: Rehabilitation of Tissues

Treatment of cancers allows good carcinologic results but induces aesthetic and functional sequelae. Autologous transplants have been used to correct aesthetic defects since the past century and exhibit many of the qualities of the ideal filler. The methods include that the abdominal tissues were harvested, and injection into host sites was performed in a manner like that of the lipostructure technique. Ts includes the postoperative follow-up periods ranged from 2 to 88 months. Clinical monitoring of the patients was carried out and an additional pathologic study was performed on irradiated tissues surrounding the scar and on abdominal fat and treated tissues.

Session On: Ageing and therapy

The effects of chronic exposure of sun on the skin are readily apparent when skin not typically exposed to the sun and skin regularly exposed to the sun are compared. While the sun is the primary exogenous and aetiological factor in the dynamic process of skin ageing, it is the cause among several internal and environmental elements. Thus, in photo-ageing, the focus of this article is a subset of skin ageing. The influence of the sun in extrinsic skin ageing, as well as its role in potentially altering the normal course of intrinsic (also known as natural or cellular) ageing, is discussed. Telomeres found at the ends of chromosomes are believed to be integral to cellular ageing as well as in the development of cancer. In aged skin, the loss of collagen is considered the characteristic histological finding. Wrinkling and pigmentary changes are directly associated with photo-ageing and are considered its most salient cutaneous manifestations. These cutaneous signs of premature ageing are represented in photodamage.
